Following a boosting of personal computers since 1980s’, high-performance computing (HPC) has been widely employed as a powerful, indispensable tool in many research fields, including new materials, new energy, biological techniques, etc. Consequently, HPC is a potential catalyst for an independent innovation, i.e., numerical computation, large-scale simulation and big data play crucial roles in scientific discovery, reducing time and cost of novel product design, and development of high-tech products. Unfortunately, the computing resources in “Tianhe 2” has not been transformed into a real industrial development, essentially due to lack of high-performance computational softwares and qualified computational scientists, as well as low efficiency of administration in university and company.
The Institute endeavours to make a change for this situation. We aim to significantly reduce the potential barrier of application of HPC in manufacturing industry based on six servicing platforms in Tianhe 2. The Institute tries to attract a group of domestic and international enterprisers as well as medium-sized and small enterprises with initiatives of innovation and service, and to cultivate a new industrial enviornment driven by HPC. We hope that this change can realize a faster optimization of engineering processes and thus a digital intelligent manufacturing.
